It is amazing how often medical opinions change. It seems that for every study that comes out in the medical field there is another study that follows closely behind it that gives the opposite opinion or finding. Certainly the media plays a role in this, but whenever I hear or read about a different study it seems to me that people just need to use common sense.

It is difficult to find the right shoes for babies. The feet of a newly-born are different from regular feet, not just size but also in proportion. Unlike the regular developed feet, which are rectangular in proportion, infant feet are square-shaped. The width of an infant’s feet is as the as its length, making them wider than what the regular feet should look like. However, many shoe manufacturers do not consider this when developing this kind of infant clothing.

But while it could be difficult to find the right kind of infant shoes, it is extremely important since the littlest detail in a baby’s growth can alter or hinder their development. Children’s clothing and practically any kind of baby apparel can affect certain growth areas. In particular, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics, giving a baby the wrong fit of shoes can make their first step harder. Parents, therefore, should not shop blindly-especially when it comes to children’s clothing, especially for infants.

Parents should first make sure that the infant shoes provide enough safe for the infant’s feet. These are for two reasons-the infant’s irregularly-shaped feet and the growth of the infant’s feet. If you are looking for a toddler boy gift then you might want to consider a new pair of shoes. Shoes are a lot of fun and you can find many different styles. If you do buy toddler shoes you should consider a few things.

* First, make sure you find a pair that is well made. Even the cutest shoes will sit in the closet if they don’t hold up. Take a look at seams to make sure they are stitched, not glued. Fasteners should be sturdy and capable of lots of hard work. The inner and outer soles should be firmly attached, and the same goes for decorations.

* Second, make sure the shoes are the right size. Measure your child’s feet using a sizing chart, and then find the corresponding size. Don’t buy a pair that is too big (they’ll be uncomfortable and can result in more trips and falls). Beware of poking on the top of the shoes to try to locate your child’s toes as a measurement guide — toddlers tend to curl their toes and this isn’t a reliable measurement.

* Third, flexible shoes are the best for toddlers. A thick-soled or hard shoe will not be as comfortable or as safe for your little one. The more flexible, the better.

* Fourth, I recommend that you steer clear of character-related shoes. Your toddler may not like the character forever. Also, unique shoes are much easier to find if your child takes them off (but last year everybody had Cars or Disney Princess shoes). Trust me, your child’s daycare provider will love you for this one.

* Fifth, try to find a shoe that your toddler will be able to put on by herself. Toddlers love to be able to do things for themselves — and parents need every time-saving (continue reading…)
