How a Quartz Watch Works

When an electric charge is applied to quartz, it vibrates at a precise frequency, which enables it to keep an accurate track of time. The electricity in a quartz watch usually comes from a battery. The clock works by passing electricity through a quartz crystal, causing it to oscillate at a fixed frequency. The crystal is formed to have a natural oscillation at around 32,000Hz. Thee vibrations generate a small electric current, which is ‘divided down’ by the internal circuit to the required frequency. In an analogue watch, these pulses are used to move the mechanical gears inside the watch. In a digital watch, the integrated circuit continues counting pulses, as they add up to minutes, hours, and even days.

There are many advantages of a quartz watch as compared to a mechanical one.

• Firstly, it is more accurate at telling time than others, owing to its steady oscillator.
• In addition, quartz watches do not need to be wound up after regular intervals. Quartz watches are also sleeker, and slimmer than mechanical ones as quartz movements are a lot thinner than their mechanical counterparts are.
• They require little maintenance, and all you have to do is change the battery if it dies down.
• The mechanism in quartz watches allows them to perform many other functions such as make calculations, and store phone numbers. The recent innovations in watches have all been possible due to the use of quartz.
